Aromatherapy For Holistic Nutritionists

Course overview

 This comprehensive self-study course provides an in-depth exploration of aromatherapy and botanical aromatics within holistic nutrition practice. Students will explore in depth the history, chemistry, and extraction methods of essential oils, master safe and effective formulation techniques, and gain detailed knowledge of the botanical, nutritional, and therapeutic properties of key herbs and spices. 


This course emphasizes the significant overlap between the classic aromatherapy and holistic nutrition disciplines,  practical application, personalized wellness integration, and mindful use of aromatics to support physical, emotional, and nutritional well-being. 


Students finish the program with the skills and knowledge to confidently incorporate essential oils and botanical compounds into self-care routines, client guidance, and holistic nutrition practice.

Course structure

Examine the historical development of aromatherapy and the use of aromatic plants in medieval Europe. Gain insights into how culinary, medicinal, and preservative applications shaped early therapeutic practices, providing a strong contextual foundation for modern aromatherapy and holistic wellness approaches. 


Develop a comprehensive understanding of essential oil extraction methods, including steam distillation, cold expression, solvent extraction, tinctures, and enfleurage. Study the chemical composition of key aromatic compounds—terpenes, esters, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, phenols, and oxides—and learn how this knowledge informs safe, effective, and targeted application in professional practice. 


Learn practical methods for applying essential oils, including inhalation, topical use, baths, and compresses, and explore the integration of herbs and spices for nutritional and aromatherapeutic benefit. Understand the physiological and sensory effects of aromatic compounds and how to leverage them to support overall wellness. 


Master essential principles of safety, quality assessment, and professional responsibility. Topics include proper dilution, identification of phototoxic and sensitizing compounds, storage and handling best practices, and ethical considerations. This module ensures practitioners apply essential oils responsibly while maximizing therapeutic efficacy. 


This module provides an in-depth exploration of 37 key aromatic plants widely used in both nutrition and aromatherapy. For each plant, students will learn:

  • Botanical Name: The scientific designation, including variety where applicable.
     
  • Parts Used: Identification of which parts are utilized for culinary purposes and which for aromatherapy applications.
     
  • Aromatic / Flavour Profile: Key chemical constituents and their sensory characteristics.
     
  • Nutritional Blending Science: How aromatic compounds interact with other herbs, spices, and foods, including principles of flavor synergy and holistic nutritional applications.
     
  • Flavour Release Mechanism in Culinary Application: Techniques to optimize the release of aromatic compounds through heat, fats, alcohol, crushing, or infusion.
     
  • Aromatherapy Application: Therapeutic properties, traditional uses, and targeted wellness applications.
     
  • Safety Data: Guidelines for safe use in both culinary and aromatherapy contexts, including dilution recommendations, potential irritants, and toxicological considerations.
     

This module includes comprehensive profiles of herbs and spices such as cinnamon, clove, star anise, vanilla, nutmeg, cumin, cardamom, and fennel, giving students both a scientific understanding and practical knowledge of their culinary and therapeutic uses.


Translate theoretical knowledge into practical application by creating safe, effective formulations. Cover topical blends, inhalation preparations, baths, compresses, infusions, decoctions, and tinctures. This module provides the skills to design evidence-based, client-centered applications that support holistic wellness goals. 


Focus on the strategic selection of essential oils and botanical aromatics to support specific wellness objectives, including stress management, emotional balance, digestive health, and immune resilience. Learn to individualize recommendations based on client needs, sensory preferences, and lifestyle, integrating aromatic interventions within a holistic framework.

 Yes. Upon successful completion of the exam, students receive a Certificate of Completion, which can be used to demonstrate knowledge and competency in aromatherapy and botanical aromatics applications in holistic nutrition realm. 


 This is a self-paced, online course. All course materials, including modules, readings, and quizzes, are provided digitally. Students can study at home and complete exercises on their own schedule. 


 The course is self-paced. Most students complete it in 6–8 weeks, depending on individual study schedules and the time spent on practical exercises and the final exam. 


 Yes. The course includes a set multiple-choice tests and a final exam. Students complete the exam at home and submit it by email for evaluation. 


No, you are not required to purchase any textbooks or essential oils. This course is designed to provide complete information on the subject matter.
